Vancouver Cantata Singers holds auditions throughout the year as needed for both paid and unpaid positions. Interested singers should have significant solo vocal training and choral singing experience. The ability to read music and competence in sight singing are essential.  Knowledge of music theory is also desirable.

The Audition Process:

1. Let us know of your interest by emailing us at auditions@vancouvercantatasingers.com.  In response you will receive an email describing the choir's current status and asking you for information about your background and vocal training.

2. The second part of the audition process is a meeting with the music director, Eric Hannan. Singers audition on two pieces from the classical repertoire.  The pieces should be contrasting in nature and preferably in different languages (English, German, Latin, French, Italian and Spanish are best).  He will take you through your pieces, get to know your voice, discuss with you your background, your availability and your goals.  Then you and he will decide whether to proceed with the next stage.

3. At a later time, at the VCS rehearsal space, there will be 20 minute audition sessions for the auditionees before an audition committee. At this session, the singer performs the two pieces, briefly works with the music director to show range and agility, and sight reads a short piece in a quartet with members of the audition committee.

The Rehearsals:

Typically, there are six to eight rehearsals before a concert. The choir rehearses Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:30 at a church in east Vancouver (on Kaslo Street near the Renfrew SkyTrain station). There is an additional Saturday morning rehearsal (10:00 - 12:30) a week or two before the concert.
