Awards & History

Vancouver Cantata Singers was founded in 1957, and has become one of Canada’s preeminent choral ensembles. The ensemble is known for technical virtuosity, fine blend and exceptionally high performance standards encompassing 500 years of choral repertoire.

The choir also commissions new works from critically acclaimed composers which have led to extremely successful and innovative collaborations with regional and international artists and ensembles.

VCS was awarded the Canada Council’s prestigious Healey Willan Grand Prize in 2008 and again in 2011, establishing the ensemble solidly among the country’s most celebrated choral ensembles.


Over the past five years, the Vancouver Cantata Singers have placed first in their categories in the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs, and have twice won the Healey Willan Grand Prize, awarded to the choir giving the most convincing performance in musicianship, technique and program.
