"...there was a genuine sense of appreciation, and not because the concert was free. One woman took me aside after the concert, and asked me to communicate to the choir that going to the concert was the most beautiful and important (her words) thing she had done in a year. It almost took my breath away." (from an email to the choir members from manager, Dave Carlin)

with I Tromboni
Holy Rosary Cathedral, 646 Richards St. (at Dunsmuir), Vancouver
FREE

The creative forces behind Redshift Music, Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad, and the Vancouver Cantata Singers joined together to bring Cori Spezzati, a stunning presentation of spatial choir music with trombone quintet featuring performances by the Vancouver Cantata Singers and I Tromboni. This free concert took place at the Holy Rosary Cathedral in downtown Vancouver, a gothic style cathedral built in the form of a cross, host to beautiful vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and warm acoustics.

Cori Spezzati, (literally meaning “split chorus”) is a performance style developed in the late Renaissance and Baroque eras where singers and instrumentalists are placed in different locations of the performance space to utilize various spatial effects. True to its name, this concert  featured members of the Vancouver Cantata Singers and I Tromboni positioned throughout the cathedral in an extraordinary “surround sound” concert!

Repertoire for this evening  featured a number of sacred Renaissance masterpieces by 16th century Italian composers Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli. These well-known choral pieces were presented alongside stunning new works by local composers, commissioned specifically for this concert. World premieres include Lux Aeterna by Jordan Nobles and In Ecclesiis by Owen Underhill.
